Flood : My point of view as the Shah Alam citizen

Assalamualaikum and good morning everyone, it is quite a long time since my last post from about 2 weeks ago. Today I’m sharing my thoughts about the important issue that very close to me.

In the past few weeks, the situation in Malaysia is not quite good because of the floods that happening around the country. Usually, when we think about floods in Malaysia especially in the end of the year, we think the east coast states always affected by flood. But this time, it involves the Klang Valley too especially my hometown Shah Alam. It taught us to not underestimate the danger of natural disaster.

I was very shocked when reading the news about the flood hits my hometown in the social media, because think again, Klang Valley is the economic centre of Malaysia. Almost all of the industrial and freight services are focused in that area since we have the Port Klang. Bear in mind, it is the one of the 20 busiest ports in the world, ahead of Rotterdam.

When there is a flood, definitely the road had to be closed until the flood gone. We clearly see the important roads like Federal Highway and the North Klang Valley Expressway also hit by flood. It disrupts the supply chain of economic activities since the lorries who bring the raw materials can’t use the road or it itself hit by flood. Even the workers are unable to go to work due to the flood.

As a result, just couple of days after the flood, when I went to I-City Shah Alam, I saw many restaurant and shops are closed due to flood. I knew it would happen as the economic supply chain were disrupted because of the flood.

Nevertheless, I respect the relentless effort by the federal and state government leaders and agencies especially the police, military and the rescuers to help those are affected. Many the Pusat Pemindahan Sementara (PPS) were set up to help those are affected by flood. Not to forget all political parties be it the government or opposition to put aside their political differences to help for those in need.

I hope the massive flood that was happened in the end of 2021 will become an eye opener to the authorities to have the comprehensive plan to prepare the natural disaster that will happen next. That includes providing the appropriate infrastructure to contain the flood. We need more the stuff like the SMART tunnel, although not necessary to the the same like that tunnel. On the other hand, we must take a pre-caution steps, including the prevention of COVID-19 even during the flood to ensure safety for ourselves.

Happy New Year 2022!
